Glenn Gould by Jacques Marie Mage

Glenn Gould by Jacques Marie Mage

For their latest capsule collection, Jacques Marie Mage have turned their gaze to none other than Glenn Gould, commemorating 40 years since the untimely death of the legendary Canadian pianist with two highly limited frames.

From child prodigy to eccentric genius, Gould created some of the most popular piano recordings of the 20th century—like his 1956 interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Whether you’ve heard of him or not, you’ll have probably heard his piano playing.

Looking at archive photos for inspiration, the two frames in the collection are based on actual glasses worn by Gould. First up, there’s the Sonata—a bold pair of ‘60s flavoured frames which take cues from a pair of wayfarers worn by the pianist during time at his summer home on the shores of Ontario’s Lake Simcoe. Made in Japan from 10mm acetate, they combine classic lines and an arched brow with those precious metal details that JMM are renowned for.

And then there’s the Fugues. These beauties are based on a majestic pair of navigators Gould often wore with his signature outfit of a heavy woolen coat, a flat cap and gloves. Probably best described as ‘retro futurist’, those massive lenses are paired with chunky titanium temples and silver arrowhead pins to create a pair of shades every bit as unique as the man who inspired them.

Both frames come in a box-set, complete with a leather case and an exclusive vinyl reissue of Goldberg Variations.

If anything was going to inspire us to dust off our Casio keyboard and get practicing Bach compositions, it’s these frames…
